Barrabas was an infamous criminal - an insurrectionist involved in inciting riots - who was awaiting crucifixion when Jesus was brought before Pilate. Finding Jesus guilty of nothing and unworthy of being charged, Pilate offered to release Jesus into Roman custody and crucify Barrabas in his stead. The crowd, however, demanded that Jesus be crucified and Barrabas be released. After Christ's crucifixion, Barrabas returned to a life of anarchic crime until he was hunted down and murdered for his role in the death of the savior. He now resides in Hell, where he is constantly crushed and killed by a bloodthirsty mob of damned souls and demons. This is the torment he has chosen for himself, as he feels guilty of accepting freedom when he could have refused it given his life for Jesus.
